Mrs. Joy S. Smith, 86, of Sparks, passed away Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Tift Regional Medical Center. She was born January 1, 1926, to the late Walter Scott Shierling and Dula Hall Shierling in Hahira but has lived most of her life in Sparks. Mrs. Smith was a member of Sparks United Methodist Church and a retired bookkeeper for Adel Feed and Seed.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William A. "Bill" Smith; two brothers, Ralph Shierling and Walter "Dud" Shierling; and two sisters, Oma Allen and Nell Shierling. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Snuffy and Connie Smith of Sparks and Ralph Smith of Valdosta; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Gene McDaniel of Tifton; eight grandchildren, Will and Michelle Smith of Sylvester, Ruth Smith of Atlanta, Bea J. Smith Grant and Caleb Grant of Statenville, Billye Smith Jones and Brett Jones of Valdosta, Bonnie Smith of Valdosta, Bo Smith of Valdosta, Bridget Permenter Smith and Marlin Smith of Adel, and Jess and Torie Permenter of Adel; ten great-grandchildren, Worth Smith, Luke Smith, Mackenzie Jones, Brooks Grant, Reed Grant, Macy Jones, Alley Permenter, Jake Permenter, Kale Smith and Nate Smith; and one sister, Nerine McIntyre of Sparks.
A funeral service for Mrs. Smith will take place Tuesday evening at 7 pm at Sparks United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary James officiating and eulogies provided by Ralph Smith, Cindy Williams and Susie Betts. Interment will follow at Sparks Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Boone Funeral Home, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave., in Adel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation (www.blindness.org).
